Before Boarding Your Dog
Your dog is part of the family. You want only what’s best for your pet. They can’t always go with you where ever you go. So how do you know they are in good hands while you’re away? Here are some questions you should ask the staff of the pet boarding facility to make sure your best friend on four legs is well taken care of while you’re gone.
1. Are there “no-cage” alternatives?
If you will be away for an extended period of time, the thought of your pet being confined to a kennel for most of the time is disheartening. Ask if there are alternatives that allow your pooch a little more freedom.
2. May I have a tour?
Before leaving your precious pet with a dog boarding kennel, you should request a tour. If the staff declines your request or makes an excuse, they have something to hide. Taking a tour will provide you the best opportunity for observing how they operate first-hand.
3. How many dogs does your facility hold?
You could ask this in conjunction with taking a tour of the facility. Count how many dogs you see and compare with what you were told. Does there seem to be ample room for each pet? There are regulations for how much space is required per pet so pay close attention. An overcrowded facility is a huge red flag and may be reflective of a facility more concerned with making money than taking special care of your dog.
4. How many staff members are on duty?
Does there seem to be adequate coverage for the number of animals on-site? Dogs will need to be walked, fed and otherwise taken care of. If there are only one or two staff members on duty for a large number of animals, this may be a sign that your pooch may not get the attention they need.
5. What happens in the event of an emergency?
If your animal becomes sick or is injured during their stay, what protocols are in place to take care of them and to notify you of the events. You will want to ensure that the facility has a standard operating protocol or checklist of what they do in the case of a crisis.
6. What is included in the daily boarding cost?
Don’t assume that the fee paid covers the cost of everything your pet will need during their stay. You will want to note whether food is included or you will need to bring your own. A luxury pet boarding facility may have additional amenities that require an additional cost.
7. Do you screen dogs that come into the facility and how do you handle aggressive dogs?
You want to ensure that your pet is safe while you are away. You will want to confirm that the facility you choose has a screening process to keep all animals staying there safe. If your dog happens to be aggressive, you will be confident that the facility has the capability to meet your pet’s needs.
Before Boarding Your Dog – Finding a proper pet boarding facility to house your favorite canine while you’re away is an important decision. Asking questions will help to ensure that you can go away knowing your pet will be treated as if they are in their second home while you’re away.
